Dental abfraction is one of the four forms oftooth wear, along with abrasion, attrition and erosion. It is characterized by a loss of the top layer of enamel, and can be caused by a number of different factors. Studio Dentaire, which has been helping patients in Lyon since 1999, explains the symptoms of this disorder and presents possible treatments.
Abfraction occurs when the tooth enamel wears away, revealing the yellowish dentine, the second layer of the tooth. As only the enamel is damaged, this problem is not usually painful, which explains why it is rarely taken seriously by patients. However, over time, dentin can also be attacked, causing sensitivity and pain when brushing, or when exposed to cold, hot, acid or sugar.
Like all abnormal tooth wear, bruxism can be the cause. Better known as “teeth grinding”, this phenomenon, often linked to stress, usually occurs at night. It can have many consequences: wear, jaw pain, muscular tension, sleep disorders…
Another cause of dental abfraction is occlusal imbalance. Occlusal forces control jaw clenching and chewing. The result is an uneven distribution of pressure on the teeth, with some teeth wearing down faster than others.
Unsuitable dentures, as well as the consumption of acidic foods, soft drinks, alcohol or tobacco, can intensify tooth wear and accelerate its progression. On the other hand, the presence of a cavity in a tooth complicates brushing and can lead to the formation of cavities.
