Tooth wear is characterized by increased fragility and visible erosion of the tooth surface, often accompanied by hypersensitivity to hot or cold. In severe cases, the tooth may even break.
There are many causes of tooth enamel wear, bruxism or “teeth grinding” being the most common. Tooth abrasion or erosion can also be caused by using a toothbrush that’s too hard or brushing too vigorously, by certain eating habits, or by ageing enamel. Finally, misalignment of the jaws can lead to dental abfraction (a type of wear affecting mainly the edges of the teeth, especially at the base).
In addition to the unsightly appearance of worn teeth, this phenomenon increases the risk of cavities and other oral diseases, as the enamel no longer plays its protective role. Fortunately, there are solutions for tooth wear.
