What is periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease attacks the gums around the tooth and the bone that supports it. Tartar has formed on and under the gums, causing inflammation and bleeding. The gum then tends to pull away from the root, creating pockets in which bacteria proliferate. These attack periodontal tissues, notably the alveolar bone that holds the tooth in place, causing the tooth to loosen.

The 6 signs of illness

1. red, swollen gums

2. bleeding gums

3. gaps begin to appear between teeth, causing food to become trapped in them

4. one or more teeth begin to move

5. gingival recession (loosening)

6. diffuse pain, gingival irritation, or any sensation of discomfort

Depending on the degree of damage, these signs are not necessarily present at the same time.
