What is a dental crown?

An artificial dental crown can be used to rebuild a smile after the placement of a dental implant, or when teeth are badly decayed.

It’s like a cap replacing the entire natural crown of the tooth (the visible part).

A crown can be made from a variety of materials, including metal. For aesthetic reasons, Le Studio Dentaire only uses ceramic crowns with a zirconia structure. This allows us to reproduce the appearance of the natural tooth (including its brightness) and prevent an unsightly grey border from appearing as the gums recede over the years.

This type of crown is as resistant and biocompatible as a natural tooth: its integration with the surrounding dental tissue is optimal.

Why have a crown?

Crowns can be placed on decayed teeth whose pulp is not affected, on devitalized teeth or on dental implants where the tooth has been extracted.

This operation has many advantages:

complete restoration of decayed, fractured or damaged teeth

tooth restoration with fillings

regain normal mastication

regain a white shade (for natural teeth whose discoloration is too pronounced to benefit from tray whitening)

What’s more, this solution offers real stability: unlike removable appliances, the crown is permanently bonded. Not only do you not need to remove it for maintenance, but it’s also biocompatible, as strong as a natural tooth and respectful of your tissues.

Are there any contraindications?

Wearing a ceramic dental crown is not recommended in the following cases:

untreated periodontal disease

untreated decayed teeth

How is the installation carried out?

The installation of a dental crown is performed under local anaesthetic and requires at least 2 appointments at Studio Dentaire :

1/ 1st appointment: your dentist prepares the tooth. He or she gently trims a small section to leave enough room for the prosthesis. An impression of the tooth is then made to serve as a model for the prosthodontist. In the meantime, we’ll install a temporary acrylic prosthesis that will allow you to chew and smile normally. This will also help us prepare your gums to receive your permanent dental ceramic crown and protect your tooth.

2/ 2nd appointment: once the ceramic dental crown is ready, we bond it permanently in your mouth using dental cement.

Performed under local anaesthetic, the procedure is painless.
