A dental implant is a titanium screw that is inserted into the jawbone to replace the root of an extracted tooth.
This procedure is performed in a dental implantology practice such as Le Studio Dentaire, and allows a fixed prosthesis to be fitted a few months later. This avoids the need for a removable appliance, while preserving the adjacent teeth.
Implant placement is made possible by the process of osseointegration (literally, integration into the bone). Titanium is a biocompatible material that will be assimilated by the body: the jawbone will heal around the implant, integrating it into the bone.
To achieve this, there must be sufficient bone in the tooth to be replaced. If this is not the case, a dental bone graft may be considered, simply delaying implant placement.
The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic in the operating theatre of our practice by your implantologist dentist.
The gingiva is gently incised, and the implant bed prepared. Once the implant has been placed, we apply stitches to promote healing. We’ll remove them about 1 week later, once we’ve been able to check that healing has taken place.
It is then necessary to wait between 4 and 6 months for the jawbone to heal around the implant before a prosthesis can be fitted.
A provisional prosthesis may be offered in the interim.
Several follow-up visits will also be included in your care program.
Implant placement is painless, and you will be prescribed medication before the procedure in addition to the anesthetic. This way, you’ll avoid any swelling.
