What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a titanium screw designed to replace the root of an extracted tooth. The implantologist places it in the jawbone to support a ceramic crown.

The jawbone will then integrate the implant as it heals: this is known as osseointegration. Titanium is a biocompatible material, hence its use in dental implantology.

Unlike bridgework, it avoids the need for removable dentures, and preserves adjacent teeth.

The only constraint is that there must be sufficient, good-quality bone. If this is not the case, a bone graft may be considered.

How does the procedure work?

The procedure will take place at our dental implant surgery under local anaesthetic.

If it proves necessary to remove one or more teeth, we will work with you to consider the placement of an implant and a crown, depending on the assessment carried out during the initial consultation and the desired result.

Depending on the case, the implant may be placed immediately after tooth extraction, or once the bone and gums have healed. The procedure is performed in our operating room, under local anaesthetic.

The gingiva is slightly incised to allow the bone to accommodate the implant. Stitches are then inserted to ensure proper healing. The stitches are removed in the office within 8 to 10 days.

The procedure is simple, quick and painless, thanks to a computer-assisted surgical technique.

The final prosthesis will be fitted once the bone has healed. This should take 3 to 5 months.

If conditions allow, a temporary prosthesis can be fitted immediately after implant placement to cover aesthetic areas.

After implant placement, regular check-ups are essential. You’ll also need to maintain daily local care.

Follow the treatment prescribed by theimplantologist.

Do not rinse your mouth on the day of the procedure or the day after. Then stick to the products prescribed on your prescription.

In the hours following surgery, avoid eating food that is too hot.

Do not smoke during the healing phase.
