What is an onlay and what are its advantages?

Theonlay is inserted into the prepared tooth cavity to close it. It acts as a sort of puzzle piece, since it is custom-designed to replace the missing part of the tooth and thus reconstitute its original shape.

This prosthesis differs from the inlay, which slides into the cavity but does not close it. Made from dental ceramics or porcelain, the onlay restores the original appearance of the tooth, including its color and shine. The result is perfectly watertight, limiting the risk of infiltration or recurrence of caries.

As a general rule, this solution is recommended for teeth with little or moderate decay. The natural tooth is less altered than for a crown, which is also a major advantage.

Another advantage is thatceramic onlays exert no pressure on the tooth wall – unlike fillings. It also consolidates the natural tooth… and thus prevents fractures in the long term. Unlike fillings, it does not shrink over time.

Not only does this top-of-the-range material deliver a natural look and make the presence of the prosthesis undetectable, it also contains no bis-GMA like composites. This resin, derived from Bisphenol-A, is considered an endocrine disruptor, a type of synthetic chemical implicated in fertility problems and suspected of playing a role in the development of certain cancers. Inlays or onlaysall our prostheses for decayed or fractured teeth are custom-designed by our French partner prosthetists from top-of-the-range, non-allergenic ceramics that are fully traceable to combine comfort and safety.

How is an onlay placed at Studio Dentaire?

Onlays are inserted in the operating room of our Lyon dental practice over two or three sessions.

We systematically carry out a complete oral check-up before scheduling a procedure. Depending on your state of oral health, we may be able to suggest treatment if necessary.

We also take an impression of your teeth using a digital 3D camera for added convenience. This enables us to design a customized onlay that fits perfectly into your tooth. The onlay is designed in digital format before being fabricated by a prosthetic craftsman.

In the first session, we treat the cavity and apply a bandage to the fissure.

Once the prosthesis is ready, a second session is scheduled to place the onlay using a special dental adhesive.
