What exactly are dentures?

The role of a dental prosthesis is to replace the visible tooth or “restore” it to a more aesthetic appearance. A distinction is made between prostheses – meaning crowns, bridges, veneers or onlays – and dental implants – a titanium “screw” that replaces the tooth root and on which a crown or bridge is placed. Removable dentures are also considered as prostheses. Fixed – the prosthesis is made of top-of-the-range ceramics by craftsman prosthodontists from impressions of the teeth taken at our dental practice, which specializes in the fitting of prostheses. The result is natural-looking, undetectable to the naked eye.

What are the advantages of different prostheses?

Each prosthesis has its own role! Depending on your situation (missing tooth, decayed tooth or cosmetic correction) and the state of your teeth, your dental surgeon will suggest the most appropriate solution following a full oral and dental check-up at our Lyon office. All our prostheses are made-to-measure by French dental technicians, based on an in-office impression of your teeth taken with our brand-new PrimeScan dental camera, for a faster, more comfortable process than traditional impression paste.

Restoring decayed teeth: crowns and onlays

If your tooth is too badly decayed, a simple composite is not enough to restore your tooth permanently over time. In fact, the joint between the composite and the tooth will leak over time, leading to recurrence of decay. An onlay is a ceramic inlay made by our dental technician according to a precise impression of your teeth taken with our PrimeScan camera.
Your prosthetic dentist inserts it into the cavity to be filled, which he will have cleaned and prepared beforehand. The custom-made onlay is positioned like a puzzle piece to reconstitute the complete tooth, respecting its original shape and natural color. The result is watertight and therefore durable. The risk of infiltration and recurrence is limited.

If the decay reaches the nerve of the tooth, the tooth must be devitalized. In this case, it’s often a good idea to crown the tooth, as it’s more fragile and tends to blacken. A crown is a cap that covers the entire tooth. New prosthetic techniques make it possible not only to reproduce the natural color of the tooth, but also to preserve or restore its original shape.

Replacing a missing tooth: implant-supported crowns and bridges

If you need to have one or more teeth extracted, you can opt for an implant-supported crown or a dental bridge. The bridge replaces a missing tooth on the basis of two adjacent teeth, which will have to be trimmed, while the implant-supported crown rests on a titanium screw implanted in the bone. As the name suggests, an implant-supported crown replaces the visible part of the tooth. It is fixed to an abutment attached to a dental implant. In addition to its perfectly natural appearance, it has the advantage of not having to alter or devitalize adjacent teeth, and of resisting the forces of chewing. It is often the most advantageous solution for restoring smiles, comfort and speech. It can also easily replace decayed teeth.

To restore or modify the appearance of teeth: veneers

For aesthetic reasons (restoring natural color, shape, size, alignment or appearance of teeth) or sometimes for medical reasons (bruxism, anorexia with dental decay), dental veneers may be advisable. These thin ceramic films are bonded to the outside of the tooth in the dental office.

This solution modifies the appearance of the tooth while keeping it alive. Only a very small part of the tooth is trimmed to fix it. It’s a minimally invasive technique that allows you to treat a single tooth like a whole row of teeth, with a natural-looking result.
