Also known as gum grafting, gum reconstruction is indicated in cases where the gums have receded or become too thin. This procedure is performed by the dental surgeons at Studio Dentaire, based in Lyon 3rd in the Rhône region since 1999.

Reconstruction aims to increase the thickness or height of the gum. It is recommended in several cases:
In the event of gingival recession caused by over-aggressive brushing that uncovers the roots
To thicken gums in preparation for dental implant placement
Following a traumatic piercing
To counteract tooth misalignment (too far forward) caused by braces
This procedure also helps prevent tooth loosening, a common consequence of gum retraction.
Gingival reconstruction is performed in one of our three operating theatres. Beforehand, your dentist will give you a consultation to determine whether the operation is feasible. Grafting can only be carried out if there is sufficient bone mass. Your dentist will also check that you have no contraindications to this surgical procedure. Performed under local anaesthetic, gingival grafting begins by slightly lifting the gums. The surgeon then removes a piece of gum (from edentulous ridges) or palate, positions it and sutures it in place. Finally, a protective plate is placed over the harvested area. In some cases, a biocompatible artificial collagen graft can be used.
Like all surgery, gum grafting requires certain precautions in the days following. We recommend that you rest for 48 hours after the operation. Your dentist will have prescribed painkillers and anti-inflammatories in case of post-operative pain. Finally, it’s best to avoid hard foods in the early stages.
After around ten days, you return to the office for a follow-up visit, during which your practitioner removes the stitches. Healing generally takes a fortnight. During this period, we advise you to refrain from smoking.
Not included in the Social Security nomenclature,gum surgery is not reimbursed. However, some complementary organizations offer partial reimbursement of the procedure.
