There are two different phenomena: gum retraction and tooth loosening. The former is caused by traumatic brushing or orthodontic treatment, and manifests itself as receding gums, revealing the roots of the teeth. This problem, which can cause aesthetic discomfort, can be resolved with a gingival graft.
In the case of receding gums, the gums seem to “melt”, revealing more and more of the root of the affected teeth. It is caused by a severe infectious disease called periodontitis, which attacks the tissues supporting the teeth, with irreversible consequences (loss of bone level in the jaw, shifting teeth…). The causes of periodontitis are diverse, and often multiple (stress, heredity, smoking, medication, etc.).
The good news is that it’s possible to halt the progression of this pathology as soon as symptoms are detected, even if several teeth are affected. Of course, the sooner the better, but if you already have teeth that are loose, have shifted in your jaw or are even moving, it’s always possible to intervene to stabilize the situation.
