Here we explain what periodontal disease is, what its consequences are, and how you can follow up at our practice.
Periodontology is a discipline focused on the treatment of gum and bone diseases – i.e. pathologies affecting the supporting tissues of the tooth.
These include gingivitis and periodontitis, which have certain symptoms in common, but it’s important not to confuse them.
Gingivitis is a benign inflammation of the gums, giving them a red, swollen appearance. It is caused by an accumulation of bacteria in the plaque around the teeth and under the gums. It often leads to bleeding when brushing. Although entirely reversible, this condition must be treated in good time, otherwise it can develop into periodontitis, which can have far more serious consequences.
In fact, periodontitis is not simply a reaction of the gums; it attacks all the tissues supporting the teeth, gradually destroying them. The gums gradually recede, giving the impression of “melting away”, revealing the roots of the teeth. If the destruction of the alveolar bone is advanced and the disease is not stopped, tooth loss may occur. There are also risks to general health if the infection passes into the bloodstream: increased risk of diabetes and heart disease, or aggravation of existing pathologies.
This usually only happens after several decades, after a slow and often discreet evolution, but it’s important to react as soon as possible to limit the damage as much as possible.
This pathology is irreversible (the part of the bone that has been destroyed cannot be rebuilt), but it can be stabilized and prevented from returning with appropriate treatment and daily care.

The check-up lasts a minimum of 1h30 and includes a thorough examination of your mouth and a saliva test to confirm the diagnosis. In the case of proven periodontitis, we will take a series of x-rays to assess bone destruction.
Periodontal treatment will clean out the pockets of bacteria that have formed to sanitize the mouth and halt the progression of the disease. It consists of a series of scaling and lithotripsy sessions (a painless sonic method) to remove tartar from the surface of the teeth, but also from beneath the gums.
We’ll also give you a dental kit and explain how to use it, so that you can carry out daily care at home. Before the sessions begin, these will help to prepare the mouth; afterwards, they will help to keep the mouth healthy so that infection doesn’t reoccur.
At the end of the treatment, you will be offered a follow-up check-up with your periodontist to avoid relapses.
The cost of periodontal treatment ranges from €900 to €4500, depending on the number of lithotripsy sessions required. An estimate will be provided at the end of the assessment. If necessary, we can offer you a personalized schedule to access this non-nomenclature treatment.
Loose teeth can cause aesthetic discomfort by exposing the roots and creating “gaps” between the teeth. If you wish, we can offer you ceramic or composite veneers to remedy this problem.
