Are loosening teeth synonymous with periodontitis?

Yes, while bleeding gums on brushing should be cause for concern and prompt consultation of a periodontal specialist, it is not always synonymous with periodontitis. Tooth loosening, however, leaves no doubt as to the diagnosis.

The periodontium is the tissue that supports the teeth. It includes not only the gums, but also the alveolar bone that supports the tooth, and the ligament that connects the bone to the tooth.

Gingivitis is a periodontal disease characterized by bleeding and swelling of the gums. It is easily treated if caught early. Periodontitis, on the other hand, is a much more virulent settled disease, attacking not only the gums, but also the bone.

The infection is caused by an accumulation of bacteria around the teeth, but also under the gums. The causes can be multiple: a genetic factor can come into play, making bacteria more virulent, even with good brushing.

What are the symptoms of periodontitis?

Apart from bleeding teeth (when brushing, during meals or spontaneously), the most common symptoms are :

Progressive loosening of teeth

Pain or discomfort in the gums

Tooth migration: spaces are created between the teeth

Moving teeth (a sign of ligament damage)

Some symptoms may be present, others absent, depending on the progression of the disease.
