The term “periodontium” refers to all the tissues that hold the tooth in place in the jaw: gingiva, of course, but also alveolar bone and ligament.
In the case of bacterial inflammation such as gingivitis, only the gums are affected. Periodontitis, on the other hand, is a chronic infection that attacks the entire periodontium and can lead to loosening or even loss of teeth.
A consultation with a periodontologist will help identify the disease, determine its progression and develop an appropriate care program to treat it and prevent recurrence.

During the first session, we’ll carry out a full diagnostic check-up. This may include studying the bacteria present in your saliva. In the case of periodontitis, a series of X-rays will be taken to assess bone loss.
We also take into account factors such as the use of medications, which can in some cases promote the onset or development of periodontal disease.
This will enable us to offer you tailor-made treatments with adapted techniques.
In most cases, periodontal treatment consists of cleaning up the mouth by thoroughly cleaning the periodontal pockets that have formed between the teeth and gums.
The formation of these pockets filled with aggressive bacteria is responsible for the progressive loosening of teeth in the case of periodontitis.
For this, you’ll set up local home care and we’ll remove supra- and infra-gingival tartar over several appointments at short intervals to avoid recontamination.
In certain situations, antibiotics may be prescribed.
You will be offered a follow-up check-up to ensure that the situation has stabilized.
In cases of significant bone loss, it may be necessary to lift the gum to gain direct access to the tartar. This procedure is performed under local anaesthetic and is indicated when periodontal pockets are significant.
These periodontal treatments may be proposed to you depending on the conclusions of the assessment prior to drawing up your treatment plan.
