Tooth loosening is characterized by the loss of gum tissue around and between the teeth. It is caused by an advanced periodontal disease known as periodontitis.
The periodontium refers to the tissues that support the teeth. It’s made up of 4 elements: the gum, of course, but also the alveolar bone (the jawbone) which the gum covers, the ligament which allows the tooth to move slightly in the jaw, and the cementum which acts as a glue between the ligament and the tooth.
When one of these elements becomes infected, we speak of periodontitis. This disease can manifest itself in different ways. Depending on the nature of the disease, the degree to which it progresses and the individual patient, there may be bleeding, unpleasant odours in the mouth, pain when hot, cold or chewing, food getting stuck between the teeth, teeth moving or shifting.
Periodontitis is an infection caused by bacteria in your dental plaque that are harmful to your periodontium.
In a healthy mouth, there’s a balance between the presence of bacteria and your immune system’s ability to fight them. If your immune system can’t fight them, bacteria thrive and destroy your periodontium.
Whatever the cause, bleeding that is symptomatic of gum inflammation should prompt you to consult a periodontologist as soon as possible, even if there is no evidence of tooth loosening.
This progressive loss of attachment can eventually lead to tooth loss.
In addition to this risk and the unattractive smile, the risks to general health are also significant: if the infection passes into the bloodstream, it can promote the onset of coronary heart disease, or aggravate existing diabetes or cardiovascular pathology.
