Loose teeth: what is the link with periodontitis?

A loosening tooth is a sign of gum loss around and between the teeth. Unlike gingival recession, caused by traumatic brushing, loosening is due to advanced periodontitis.

This dental pathology often begins with benign inflammation (gingivitis). When left untreated, or as a result of certain factors (including biological and hereditary factors), the pathology develops into severe periodontal disease: pockets of bacteria form under the gums and proliferate.

Periodontitis is so named because it attacks the periodontium, the tooth’s support system. This consists of the gingiva, alveolar bone, ligament and cementum. The disease may affect one or more of these elements.

What are the different stages of periodontal disease?

The early stages of the disease can be fairly discrete: red, swollen gums, slight bleeding when brushing… When the gums begin to recede and the roots of the teeth are exposed, it’s a sign of deeper damage.

Periodontitis will attack the bone (whose level can drop significantly) and the ligament, which holds the teeth in place in the jaw. Black spaces may appear between teeth, which may also shift or begin to move.

The damage caused by the disease is irreversible. However, as the disease progresses over many years, it can be stabilized with appropriate treatment and follow-up.
