The mechanisms of tooth wear

Bruxism is the main cause oftooth wear. The unconscious reflex of grinding or clenching exerts repeated pressure on the teeth, which can eventually damage them if left unchecked. This pressure, combined with the repeated horizontal movement of the jaws during grinding, will have the effect of progressively filing down the dentition, particularly the front teeth. Advanced wear gives the impression of damaged teeth. The result is all the more unsightly in that not all teeth are worn in the same way. Often linked to stress, bruxism can also occur only at night, during sleep, or be caused by misalignment between the upper and lower jaws, cervical trauma or medication. Beyond the aesthetic consequences on the dentition, teeth grinding can also cause migraines, neuralgia, dental fractures or even damage to the jaw joint. It is therefore important to be able to act on the causes of the problem, and not just on the aesthetic dimension.

What treatment for worn teeth?

Tooth wear requires appropriate treatment. When front teeth are worn, dental veneers can restore a normal appearance while protecting the natural tooth beneath. A veneer is a thin film of porcelain or ceramic that is superimposed on the visible surface of the tooth. It not only restores the natural shape and color of the tooth, but also corrects the spacing between the teeth. Because the pressure exerted by the jaws is significant when suffering from chronic bruxism, it is possible to benefit from even more resistant glass-ceramic veneers. Veneers have the advantage of being able to correct one or more teeth as required. They do not require devitalization of the natural tooth, as is the case with a bridge: only a very small part of the tooth is cut away to enable the veneer to be attached. When teeth have lost a great deal of volume, an overlay can restore the original volume and strengthen the tooth. In fact, the occlusal surfaces of teeth (their chewing surfaces) can become hollow under the effect of repeated teeth grinding, which can lead to functional problems. Wearing a mouthpiece is also recommended to treat bruxism and protect worn teeth. Custom-designed and worn for a few hours a day or overnight, the dental splint helps restore harmonious contact between the teeth.

You can expect to pay €850 (including aftercare) for a mouthpiece, €655 for a porcelain onlay and €1550 for each veneer. In the case of onlays, only a small proportion is reimbursed by Social Security, on the basis of the conventional tariff. Dental veneers are not covered by the nomenclature.
